THE UNPOPULARITY OF FOREIGN SURNAMES 
The change of foreign surnames by British citizens goes on apace, the 
above being those changed since similar lists appeared in our issues op 
Nove7nber 10 and January 2. The Rev. Charles Ord War low, Rector 
of St. George's, Bloomsbury, who heads the list, has not a drop of 
German blood, the Teutonic surname having merely been adopted by 
his father. Mr. Anderton, who was formerly Cuckow, is a lieutenant 
in the R.F.A. Mr. de Keyser, formerly Kaiser, is a Belgian subjects 
and the name Vandersluis, contracted to Vann, is clearly Dutch. On 
the other hand Mr. Hodgson has becotne Mr. Paumier.

A NEW NAME FOR THE NEW YEAR 
Naturalised Englishmen with Teutonic surnames are still busy ex 
changing them for the genuine British article, and the above list, 
compiled from advertisements in the “ Times,” shows the changes 
made between November 17 and December 25. A previous list 
appeared in our issue for November 21. 
In reply to Sir Arthur Pinero’s letter in your issue of the nth inst., 
will you allow me to say that I shall be very glad to join in a loyal 
address to the King to express on behalf of naturalised British 
sub jects of German birth their feelings of detestation at the horrors 
committed by the German Army and Navy in the prosecution of 
the war, culminating in the cold-blooded murder of the innocent 
victims of the Lusitania ? Meanwhile, as Sir Arthur suggests that 
silence lays us open to the suspicion of sitting on the gate, I take 
the earliest opportunity of declaring, in the most emphatic manner, 
that my feelings are no less strong and unequivocal than those of 
any British-born subject of hte Majesty, and that I have lost all 
regard and affection for the country which is not ashamed of 
applauding such acts of infamy.

“Times” from Germans and people bearing German names, written 
in response to a suggestion made by Sir Arthur Pinero, who himselj 
is descended from the old Sephardic family of Pinheiros. 
Leute mit deutschen Namen und naturalisierte Briten, die nach Kriegsausbruch ihre deutsche Abstammung 
verleugnen zu müssen glaubten und als äußeres Zeichen ihrer Gestnnung ihren Namen anglisterten. Alan wird 
gut tun, sich diese Leute für die Zeit nach dem Kriege zu merken. Unten rechts der schamlose Brief eines
